The effectiveness of such a measure has already shown itself in previous years, and according to the results of 2013, the Kaliningrad region became one of the few regions of Russia where not a single case of rabies was recorded among animals.

Vaccination period

Usually, rabies vaccination is given twice a year – in spring and autumn. This happens like this: lures with anti-rabies vaccine are scattered from light-engine aircraft throughout the region, with the exception of settlements and water bodies.

According to the head of the Veterinary Services and State Veterinary Inspection Alexander Murygin, the effectiveness of this measure is obvious. If in 2009 38 cases of this animal disease were recorded, then in 2011 – 21, and in 2012 – only 11. In 2013, not a single case of rabies was recorded among animals.

Almost 3 million euros were allocated by the European Union from 2007 to 2014. Kaliningrad region for vaccination of wild animals against rabies. As the agreement expires this year, the European Commission approved the extension of the program for two more years and submitted a draft new agreement for the period from June 2014 to June 2016.

Within the framework of the extended agreement, the European Union is ready to allocate another 1.1 million euros in addition to measures to vaccinate animals.
